Quest Diagnostics, one of the largest medical lab operators in the US, disclosed the incident in an SEC filing and a notice on its website.
What is known
- The company learned of the intrusion on Oct 21. The target was Quanum LSM (Lab Services Manager), the online platform physicians, hospitals and medical offices use to order tests, view results and statuses, and order supplies.
- Quest believes some patient records were exposed; summaries say health information and personal data are involved. The number of affected people and exact data types are not yet determined.
- The company activated its incident response plan, brought in outside experts and notified law enforcement.
- Quanum LSM was shut down, and access to Essential Insights and LabHQ was temporarily paused. Customers were told to use paper requisitions or Quanum eLabs.
- Quest says customer-facing operations were not disrupted and users of direct LIS and EMR interfaces were not affected.
- At the time of publication no group had claimed the attack.
Context
This is not Quest’s first major incident: in 2019 a breach at billing collector AMCA exposed data of about 11.9 million of its patients, and litigation over it is still ongoing. Healthcare remains one of the most targeted sectors.
For developers of healthcare integrations the lesson is familiar: B2B partner portals are often less protected than core infrastructure yet expose the same sensitive data.
