Agent Compute Engine
Cloud Hypervisor.
Agent Substrate
Agent Gateway
On Oct 22 Google Cloud unveiled infrastructure for running AI agents at scale.
Agent Compute Engine
- MicroVMs on the Titanium platform with a Cloud Hypervisor isolation boundary.
- Checkpoint and restore — an agent can be frozen and resumed later.
- A dedicated Hyperdisk per VM.
- Preview “in the coming months”.
Agent Substrate
- An open-source runtime for any Kubernetes cluster, with microVM or gVisor isolation.
- Google’s claims: up to 10x density, 500 activations per second and suspend/resume under 500 ms, in a 200,000-agent benchmark. There are no independent measurements yet, and we did not verify the repo or license.
Agent Gateway
New features arrive in preview this quarter: token and cost governance and routing between models.
Why it matters
An agent that executes code needs VM-level isolation, not just a container. But ordinary VMs are expensive and slow to start. The microVM plus suspend/resume approach lets you keep thousands of agents while paying only for the active ones. Agent Substrate is especially interesting for people outside Google Cloud: it can run in your own cluster.
