ECS Managed Instances.

AWS has introduced Amazon ECS Gateway, managed ingress for Amazon ECS services. Previously each service needed a hand-built or IaC-built chain: Application Load Balancer, listener rules, target group, ACM certificate, DNS record, security groups and optionally WAF. Now ECS handles it.

How it works

  • A gateway is a new account-level resource. ECS creates and removes ALBs, ACM certificates, hostnames, listener rules, target groups, security groups and, optionally, AWS WAF web ACLs.
  • Up to 25 services share one ALB. A gateway can be associated with up to 10,000 clusters, and a cluster can have up to 5 gateways; the default maxAlbCount quota is 10.
  • Works with awsvpc services on EC2, Fargate and ECS Managed Instances.
  • Existing services opt in via UpdateService, and old and new ingress paths can run side by side — handy for gradual migration.

Pricing and availability

No extra charge: you pay only for the ALBs, WAF and other underlying resources. Available in all commercial Regions where ECS runs.

Who benefits

Platform teams running dozens of ECS services: a large chunk of boilerplate Terraform/CDK for ingress goes away, and sharing an ALB across services cuts costs. Check how the gateway fits with your existing DNS and certificate management before moving production services.
